Facts about Fonts

Fonts are precious styles of writing that I will tell you a little about in the proceedings of this article; they have been around since the first man laid his fingers on a pen and have successfully told their tales to many. After the release of computers, fonts were easily notified to have hundreds of different forms; most of these were released in the year 1995 when Microsoft introduced Windows 95 for the world to feast their eyes on. Before the release of Windows 95, a lot of the fonts that you see today would have been non-existent; you would simply be staring at freehand writing, calligraphy or any other forms of writing completed by man.

Fonts are a unique source of writing basically used to skin each and every word that you type/write; fonts is basically just the scientific (sort of computerized version) of writing. If you ever hear someone talking about different fonts it isn't very likely to hear them talking about calligraphy, now is it? They're probably talking about different sorts of fonts on the computer, thus is why this article will have an approach as if fonts are only for the computer.

Some quick facts (these are specifically ones whilst on the computer):

  • Fonts have different types of spaces in between certain combinations of letters; you will notice that the letters b and a (ba) will be further away than the letters l and e (le). This is called kerning.
  • When you change the test size of your fonts, they will automatically bold themselves; this means that they enlarge themselves by a scale factor and not in any other way.
  • The first font that Microsoft ever created was "Times New Roman," they seem pretty proud of it too; this is the main reason why Times New Roman is the default for most Microsoft programs too!

A font family is a different fonts linked together. Generally it consists of bold ,plain, italic and bold italic weights. By creating a link between these fonts we can create style buttons like we do in Ms Word. Suppose you are typing a text using plain type of the font and if you want to change to italic just by clicking "I" Button we can do it instead of choosing italic weight from the font menu

The difference between the Windows PC and Mac PC fonts is that in Windows PC fonts that are part of font families are treated as same and the font family link eliminates the cause to see the members of font family. So Windows PC font menu shows only plain font. But in Mac PC fonts are not only organized based on family but also by their individual names. Still you can use style buttons to access different fonts but when you choose a font that is inside a folder you can see what exactly it is.

Using AA, or more commonly known as anti-alias, can help your font look sharper at different sizes. Four types of AA include sharp, crisp, smooth, and strong. Usually, you use AA on larger sizes, such as 16pt. For crisp type when using a font at a size such as 10 or 11pt, usually putting AA on doesn't turn out pretty.
